AND WEBSITE. A LOCAL POLICE OFFICER WHO GAVE HIS LIFE IN THE LINE OF DUTY LATE LAST YEAR, IS NOW PART OF A NATIONAL MEMORIAL. OUR KENNY BECK IS IN THE STUDIO TONIGHT WITH THE DETAILS FOR US. AND KENNY, WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED? LINDSAY. GOOD EVENING. FOR THE SECOND YEAR IN A ROW, THE GREENSBORO POLICE DEPARTMENT HAS HAD THE NAME OF ONE OF ITS OFFICERS ENGRAVED INTO A MONUMENT IN WASHINGTON, D.C., THAT ABOUT A QUARTER OF A MILLION PEOPLE VISIT EACH AND EVERY YEAR. OFFICER MICHAEL HORAN’S NAME NOW OFFICIALLY APPEARS ON THE NATIONAL LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS MEMORIAL. AN ARTIST ENGRAVED IT JUST A FEW DAYS AGO. HE IS ONE OF 345 FALLEN OFFICERS WHOSE NAME IS, OR WILL SOON BE ADDED TO THE MEMORIAL, THEN READ ALOUD DURING THE ROLL CALL OF HEROES NEXT MONTH ON THE NATIONAL MALL, WHICH CONCLUDES WITH A CANDLELIGHT VIGIL. THIS EVENT DRAWS ABOUT 30,000 PEOPLE EACH YEAR AND IS A BIG PART OF NATIONAL POLICE WEEK. OFFICER HORAN WAS SHOT AND KILLED TWO DAYS BEFORE CHRISTMAS, RESPONDING TO A CALL ABOUT A MAN WITH A GUN INSIDE OF A GROCERY STORE IN GREENSBORO. HIS DEATH OCCURRED 360 DAYS AFTER SERGEANT DALE NIX WAS KILLED TRYING TO STOP A CRIME IN PROGRESS IN COLFAX. THAT WOULD BE WAY OUTSIDE THE NORMS FOR MOST POLICE DEPARTMENTS OF THAT SIZE, AND I’M CERTAIN EVEN THOUGH I DON’T LIVE THERE, I’M CERTAIN THAT BOTH OF THOSE DEATHS HAVE LEFT THAT CRATER SIZE IMPACT IN THE LOCAL COMMUNITY, BECAUSE, OF COURSE, I RETIRED AS A POLICE OFFICER, AND I KNOW MEN WHOSE NAMES ARE ON THE WALL. BUT, YOU KNOW, I’VE ALWAYS ARGUED THAT EVERY SINGLE OFFICER IS SOMETHING MORE THAN A SINGLE THREAD IN WHICH THEY ARE WOVEN INTO THE COMMUNITY THAT THEY ARE SERVING, AND TO PULL THAT THREAD AWAY IS NOT TO LEAVE JUST A SMALL HOLE, BUT TO REALLY IMPACT THE ENTIRE FABRIC OF THAT COMMUNITY. THE NAMES OF OTHER FALLEN MEMBERS OF LAW ENFORCEMENT FROM OUR STATE HAVE ALSO BEEN ADDED TO THE WALL. DEPUTY U.S. MARSHAL THOMAS WEEKS, CHARLOTTE-MECKLENBURG OFFICER JOSHUA EYER, ALONG WITH SAMUEL POWLESS AND WILLIAM ELLIOTT FROM THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS, WERE KILLED IN CHARLOTTE WHILE TRYING TO SERVE A WARRANT. THE FIRST ANNIVERSA

The event draws about 30-thousand people to the nation's capital each year as part of National Police Week. Horan was shot and killed Dec. 23, 2024, responding to a call about a man with a gun inside a grocery store in Greensboro. His death occurred just 360 days after Greensboro police Sgt. Dale Nix was shot and killed trying to stop a crime in progress outside of a convenience store in Colfax Dec. 30, 2023. Nix's name was added to the wall and read aloud during the 2024 Roll Call of Heroes."That would be way outside the norms for most police departments of that size. And I'm certain, even though I don't live there, I'm certain that both of those deaths have left crater-sized impacts in the local community. Because, of course, I retired as a police officer and I know men whose names are on the wall. But I've always argued that every single officer is something more than a single thread in which they are woven into the community that they are serving. And to pull that thread away is not to leave just a small hole but to really impact the entire fabric of that community," said Bill Alexander, CEO of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, which oversees the memorial and National Mall ceremony. The names of other fallen members of law enforcement from North Carolina have also had their names added to the wall, including Deputy US Marshal Thomas Weeks, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Officer Joshua Eyer, along with Samuel Poloche and William Elliott from the State Department of Adult Corrections were killed in Charlotte while trying to serve a warrant. It was the deadliest attack on U.S. law enforcement since 2016. The first anniversary of that mass shooting, which also injured four others, is April 29.
