She came to the Monitor from the Anchorage Daily News, where she was Editor and Publisher from 1971 to 1983. Ms. Fanning was elected President of the American Society of Newspaper Editors for 1987-1988. In April 1988, she was elected to the Board of Directors of the Associated Press. She has also been a Pulitzer Juror three times and on the Pulitzer Prize board from 1982-83. From 1980 to 1982, she was President of the Alaska Newspaper Association. Ms. Fanning is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Center for Foreign Journalists in Washington, D.C. and of the New Directions for News, and serves on the Board of Trustees of the Kettering Foundation, the National Advisory Committee of the Gannett Center for Media Studies and the Senior Advisory Board of Harvard's Joan Shorenstein Barone Center.
