Manchester United are heading to Bilbao a week on Wednesday for an all-English Europa League final.
However, despite the 3-0 lead held going into Thursday, it was not the comfortable night that many had expected in the Europa League.
Manchester United went 1-0 down on the night to a long range effort which Andre Onana was poor in trying to save, which gave Athletic Club the hope they needed and they were pushing for most of the game without really threatening. This was before United came back to win 4-1 at Old Trafford.
However, Ruben Amorim’s triple substitution changed the game, as Mason Mount scored twice from the bench, becoming the first to do so in a major European knockout since David Beckham in 2003.
United also benefited from some Amad Diallo brilliance as he set up Rasmus Hojlund for an easy goal to score a third on the night, following Casemiro’s header, which was the second of the game.
Meanwhile, at the back, Leny Yoro was arguably the unsung hero for United, with a strong performance of his own. But there could only be one man of the match.

After his incredible 28-minute cameo, there was never going to be any other player voted as man of the match, and Mount completely deserves it, as his stats from SofaScore demonstrate.
Mount was utterly flawless and got himself all around the pitch, contributing on and off the ball, proving why he is thought of so highly by Amorim. The two goals will give him the confidence needed to hopefully end the season on a hot streak, while staying fit.

Ruben Amorim delighted by Mason Mount performance
Mount was sensational against Athletic Club, and if he keeps fit between now and the final, it seems clear that the Englishman will be starting.
It was the first time that Mount showed why Amorim considers him perfect for the United system, but also sees the 26-year-old now on a run of three goals in just two games. Amorim was visibly delighted for Mount when the goal went in, as the camera showed him with a beaming smile.

After the game, Amorim re-emphasised how key Mount can be, while speaking with TNT Sports.
“Mount is perfect for that position because he can be a midfielder, can run like a winger, and can play with his back to the goal.
“When you see that kind of guy, working hard every day, eating well, resting, ice bath, he does everything. Mason Mount, I am so happy for him; he is such a player. He works really hard.”
