The episode starts with Joe wandering the streets on a cold windy day. In front of joe a drunkard man named Kenkichi gets kicked out of an inn.Kenkichi asks Joe for money with drool coming out of his mouth and puts his hand on Joe’s shoulder. Joe steps away from Kenkichi’s grip and hits him with a knee to the stomach. Kenkichi falls over but stands back up with a maniacal smile of admiration for Joe’s fighting ability and fights Koe again parrying both of Joe’s punches. Kenkichi is a former professional boxer. He begs Joe to do boxing under his tutelage. A gangster group called Onihime is catches a girl for stealing oden and physically abuses her. Joe runs in and ruthlessly beats up the gangsters. Later, the Onihime group comes at Joeagain this time they took out knives to kill Joe. Then there's this hilarious yet touching scene where Kenkichi knocks out Joe and covers Joe with his body. The Onihime group kicks Kenkichi and he starts yelling “You’re going to become a boxer! You're tomorrow's Joe” as he coughs up blood.

Spring Anime 2021: Embarrassment of Riches

So this current anime season absolutely stinks, which just makes the last one look even more impressive. Well, maybe not all of it...

Zombieland Saga Revenge

#megalobox icons | Explore Tumblr posts and blogs | Tumgik (29)

First off, you don't need to tell me that the following is a severe outlier opinion. We good? Ok. ZLSR is, in a word, subpar. I liked S1 back in the day, but it was already in the process of getting lazy towards the end. S2 continues this trend and is basically just another idol show. And as someone who actually does watch other idol shows I have to say that it's not a particularly good one of those either. The zombie gimmick has mostly stopped mattering and we're just doing what every idol show does, only with the odd occasional sight gag. The alleged subversive qualities mostly amount to a flashback for Yuugiri, which is admittedly the best part of the show but feels like it barely has anything to do with anything. Apart from that, it's a bunch of generic idol plots, rehashed character beats, shoddy attempts at twists (while not connecting to any setups from S1), and the obligatory "idols give us hope" ending, which is terribly hackneyed and flat out bad. Tae gets further memed into the ground, because of course she does. And there's stuff that was simply never good to begin with, like Kotarou and his comedy schtick, which gets truly insufferable now that there's no qualities to distract from it. It really makes me think that S1 wasn't even all that good to begin with and seems like an attempt to turn this surprise success into an easy money longrunner with no edge and no ambitions. "The idol show for people who don't watch idol shows" indeed, but not the way you mean it. 4/10

Bakuten

#megalobox icons | Explore Tumblr posts and blogs | Tumgik (30)

But not to dwell on the failures, with the second show we're already above the cut — barely. This one got my attention with its really impressive performance scenes early on and it totally sticks to that, which is even more impressive. But besides that? Well, this is by far the most predictable show in a season where I watched an unambitious Kiraralike and put ZLS on blast for having no ideas. The characters are a mixed bag, some are cool (Shida, Asawo), some are very annoying (Mashiro), but those are the supports. The main cast is extremely one-dimensional, which is fine until they try to heap a ton of pathos on their lead, which doesn't go well. But I guess execution matters, and Bakuten is slick enough to get by. Writing this down in stark daylight I feel like I overrated this show somewhat (I actually put it over the next one originally, which definitely doesn't hold up when thinking about it), but I was indeed mostly entertained. 6/10

Yakunara Mug Cup mo

#megalobox icons | Explore Tumblr posts and blogs | Tumgik (31)

Yeah. Of course Mug Cup definitely doesn't invent or subvert anything either, but it's a pretty good Kiraralike that's always entertaining to watch. Explaining the qualities of such a nothing genre is as difficult as ever, but it mostly comes down to me liking the characters and it having nothing to annoy me. It's shorter than normal, which is a plus for slim shows like this. And yeah, you can make an excessive amount of dick jokes with the clay fondling. That helps too. Looks are just fine, pleasant but nothing out of the ordinary. Comfy low-effort anime. 6/10

Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song

#megalobox icons | Explore Tumblr posts and blogs | Tumgik (32)

This one is decent, but sadly still a major letdown. Because the first few episodes of Vivy were excellent and kicked ass, but then it became increasingly clear that the writing can't cash the checks the ideas wrote while the action starts running into severely diminishing returns. Vivy just keeps slowly getting worse and worse as it goes on, not by a huge amount each episode but by the end there's a pretty sizeable gulf between potential and result. Going into detail would probably be a little much for this venue because there's a lot, but from the top level view the issue is that while Vivy has good fundamental ideas and steals at the right places, it just isn't a smart show — it's schlock, and by the end, poorly thought out schlock that tries to smooth out every problem with liberal application of the big feels hammer and le epic twist at that. Yeah, couldn't tell that the Re:Zero dude was aboard here, for sure. That said, it still works pretty well as entertaining schlock that is not to be taken too seriously, and the characters are generally just very fun to watch even when they're doing stupid things. Still, I can't in good conscience rate this higher than Beatless, a show that looks like butt but properly executes on its ideas. 6/10

Super Cub

#megalobox icons | Explore Tumblr posts and blogs | Tumgik (33)

So this is 100% a Honda commercial, and I got really mad a Yuru Camp last season for being a blatant shill. Yet I'm feeling this, what gives? I think the main difference is that Super Cub is specifically a commercial for one product (and a very iconic product at that), while Yuru Camp is so all over the place that it ends up mostly a commercial for consumerism in general. And when Super Cub goes too hard on the product (which it does), it's at least pretty entertaining. That's something about Super Cub in general: It goes hard. Your regular Kiraralike this is not, because it's uncommonly slow, focused and moody - yes, it almost measures up to Yuru Camp at its best and demolishes it at its worst. Also, it's just extremely amusing to see sadblob Koguma grow a huge grizzly biker beard and become a badass outlaw dad to her goofy wife and cute daughter, all thanks to the power of afforable personal transportation. Needless to say, that can get unintentionally silly, but Super Cub has so much charm that it doesn't matter — it's great when it's good and still funny when it's not. 7/10

Shadows House

#megalobox icons | Explore Tumblr posts and blogs | Tumgik (34)

Shadows House turned up with a lot of potential, and I have to say it at least delivered on most of it. It has some problems; notably I'm not a fan of how the entire middle turned out to be a tournament arc of sorts that seems curiously inspired by Resident Evil memes, crest-shaped intentations and boulder punching included. I also think that this is a show that would be perfectly fine without explaining much, but I guess it is a shounen manga after all so we got dumped on eventually anyway. At least that came late - close relative Promised Neverland didn't show that much restraint. Shadows House is generally well written though, with great characters, interesting interactions and a great hook. But what really makes it memorable is that it's exceptionally good at the cute/creepy contrast, something that is often tried but rarely works as well as here, with great character designs and very appropriate production. I hope this gets a sequel, because it seems like it's just getting started. 7/10

SSSS.Dynazenon

#megalobox icons | Explore Tumblr posts and blogs | Tumgik (35)

Coming in with a fondness for Gridman, Dynazenon didn't have to do much to convince me. The surprise though is that it's not a rehash even if it's basically the same show, a character drama where occasionally huge and goofy fights break out. Dynazenon is Gridman done better, and the interesting part is how it accomplishes this - mainly by being far more conventional. I do appreciate that Gridman went for something weird and almost experimental, but that only really paid off towards the end while most of the show was a distraction/holding pattern. It just didn't feel like there was enough material for a full series there, more like a movie maybe, if even that. Dynazenon fixes this by just being a TV show, with an actual cast of characters that each have their own arc. And by spreading the material this way, Dynazenon ends up having a lot more nuance than its intensely focused predecessor, while having the same themes and not actually being any deeper. In a way, Gridman ends up looking like the spinoff in retrospect, while Dynazenon is the full package. 8/10

Thunderbolt Fantasy S3

#megalobox icons | Explore Tumblr posts and blogs | Tumgik (36)

So how good was this season? So good that Thunderbolt Fantasy doesn't end up at the top, that's how. And all the elements that made Tbolt such a sure thing are still there, big hammy puppets doing stunts and scheming never gets old. However, I do have to note that at this point, the writing appears to have gotten too comfortable. I don't expect it to ever top the amazing S1 ending, but at this point it's like Tbolt has stopped trying to deliver on endings at all and seems in the process of retooling itself into a longrunner instead. Barely anything gets resolved in S3 (the climax is that the climax of S2 is resolved again, for good this time... maybe), and everything else is just setting up plotpoints for the next season. Tbolt is truly lucky that it doesn't actually need to resolve anything to be a great time, but at this point I have to say that I'd appreciate it if they wrapped it up with S4. 8/10

Nomad: Megalobox 2

#megalobox icons | Explore Tumblr posts and blogs | Tumgik (37)

Speaking of sequels to shows I liked, Nomad doesn't so much improve upon its predecessor but steamrolls right over it. This is a tall order, since Megalobox was surprisingly good for a sports shounen and had a real nice, heartwarming ending that Nomad instantly negates for purposes of drama and everyone being extremely miserable. That sounds like a pretty terrible idea - and it would be, if Nomad wasn't as excellent as it is. To call it not the same show would be an understatement, because it's a true sequel, not just the same characters doing their thing some more, or new characters doing the same thing as the old ones did. Indeed my biggest problem with Megalobox was that it still closely adhered to its genre template and was very predictable; Nomad fixes this issue thoroughly. Nomad is about questioning what being a hotblooded shounen protagonist eventually leads you to, and how to fix everything you screwed up by being one. You could call it a deconstruction, but that term has been so abused for cynical, edgy "thing you like actually sucks" takes that I feel like it doesn't really fit here. Nomad isn't cynical at all, it's just a character drama about some boxers past their prime, and it being a sequel to a show that is indeed rather formulaic just enhances the experience. My biggest issue with it was that I really like what they did with Joe in this story, so the big focus on Mac's backstory felt like a distraction for a long time. But in the end that turned out to be absolutely necessary to make the ending work. The ending's just great, by the way, and I shall say not more about it. 9/10

Odd Taxi

#megalobox icons | Explore Tumblr posts and blogs | Tumgik (38)

Yeah boy, here's the show that has apparently become somewhat of a "greatest show you didn't watch" meme, which I can feel smug about because I don't need YouTubers to tell me what's good and followed this from day one. Anyway, Odd Taxi is indeed great, the greatest show in a few years even. What starts out as seemingly a relaxed hangout show in the vein of Midnight Diners quickly turns into a psychological murder mystery while never losing its quirky humor. The character writing is outstanding, with even small bit players being on a level that the average anime wishes it could have for leads. And the rollout of the mystery is exemplary, with answers given and new questions raised every episode with a satisfying and logical payoff in the end. This is also the rare anime that has rock solid production from the first to the last second; it's never really flashy but excellently done and highly consistent nonetheless. And the music just owns. I have a few complaints, mainly that there's a few logical weaknesses in the story (which wouldn't even register in a lesser show, but sticks out here since the rest is so immaculately constructed) and that the ending overextends on the emotions when the rest of the show is so reserved and dry in comparison. But those are only the reasons why I didn't give it perfect marks, and I almost did that anyway. 9/10

FEATURE: The Megalobox Sequel is Coming This Spring!

#megalobox icons | Explore Tumblr posts and blogs | Tumgik (42)

Hello everyone, and welcome back to Why It Works. If you haven’t heard the news, let me be the first to tell you: Megalobox is coming back this spring for a second round of brutal, beautiful boxing action. Even for someone who isn’t generally a big action show fan, the original Megalobox consistently impressed me with its unique aesthetic, punchy script (pun only somewhat intended), and impressive fight scenes. So whether you’re new to the franchise or already a fan, here’s why you should get hyped for Megalobox: Nomad!

#megalobox icons | Explore Tumblr posts and blogs | Tumgik (43)

First off, if you haven’t seen the original Megalobox, I’d suggest changing that immediately. Created as part of the 50th-anniversary celebration of the original Ashita no Joe manga, the show feels iconic from the start, with its washed-out colors and deliberately upscaled visuals evoking the sense of a cell anime left on a back shelf. The script plays tribute to its predecessor while conveying a taut and self-contained sports drama, and the actual fight scenes are both beautifully animated and tactically gripping, with the protagonist Joe serving as a perpetual underdog. For sports or action fans, Megalobox is a quick, entertaining, and highly polished experience.

So, what’s up with the sequel, then? First off, even though the distance between its announcement and release is just a couple of months, I wouldn’t be too worried about the production. TMS Entertainment is one of anime’s longest-lasting production houses, and 3xCube one of their most reliable subsidiaries; as a prestige production paying tribute to one of their most famous properties, it’s unlikely they’d ever skimp on its scheduling. In fact, you can already check out the show’s trailer, and see that at least the first couple of episodes will be maintaining the original’s signature style.

#megalobox icons | Explore Tumblr posts and blogs | Tumgik (44)

That’s not terribly surprising, given the continuity within the show’s key staff. Director You Moriyama will be returning for Nomad, along with head writers Katsuhiko Manabe and Kensuke Kojima, and even the composer mabanua. This is all for the good; Megalobox’s core team are quite talented, they clearly work well together, and maintaining this crew is the clearest possible sign that Nomad will maintain its predecessor’s appeal. With both the studio and staff remaining steady, Nomad is clearly in good hands.

Meanwhile, what staff changes are occurring may well improve the show. Hiroshi Shimizu will be exiting as character designer, replaced by the talented Ayumi Kurashima. Kurashima is a freelance animator of formidable talent, having done work ranging from animation direction on the esteemed Wolf’s Rain, to character design for the incomparable Devilman Crybaby. If you’ve seen Devilman Crybaby, you should know just how crucial its unique, angular, yet strangely realistic character designs were to its overall effect. Bringing Kurashima onto Megalobox seems like a slam dunk, a place where both the delicacy and horror of her designs can shine.

And of course, Megalobox: Nomad will still possess all the baseline structural advantages of its predecessor. Though Megalobox is “based” on Ashita no Joe, it’s more a tribute than a retelling, allowing for a unique flexibility of collaboration in its visual and narrative design. Its pedigree essentially just lends it some certainty of major studio support, while its open-ended concept allowed its architects the freedom of an anime-original production. Having already told the story of an underdog rising through the ranks, offering nods to the original Ashita no Joe along the way, Megalobox is now freer than ever to tell whatever story this team wishes.

#megalobox icons | Explore Tumblr posts and blogs | Tumgik (45)

So far, it seems like the staff are absolutely taking advantage of it. Nomad looks to be adopting a far different narrative structure than its predecessor, something clear even in its subtitle. Picking up seven years after Joe’s original victor, he now comes across more like an old soldier looking for his last battle. Joe wanders with his coach from venue to desolate venue, and even seems to be using the mechanical gear he dismissed in the first season. I’m delighted to see Megalobox isn’t simply introducing a new rival and new tournament; the staff are creating something genuinely new here, and I’m eager to see it!

So that’s why I’m hyped for Megalobox: Nomad. Let me know what you’re all looking forward to in the comments!

jesus it’s already august wtf

main points:

- figure out why icon isn’t showing up

- team meeting

- lunch at salad place

- clean up tests and try to submit command PR (but no success)

- start PR for filling logic

- start PR for minor UI changes

- work on building for client side handler

- melee with shang, eric, ivan and mansfield

- dinner + megalobox

- melee tech grind

- chill at home + the office

today i:

- woke up at 8:20am. snoozed until 9am ish again. washed my hair a bit and shaved.

ubered with damien to work. our driver was kind of sus. he missed a turn on the drive to our destination (but somehow we continued on our normal route). then on the highway he was trying to go across two lanes to exit while looking at his phone for navigation. yikes. grabbed breakfast with damien

- spent the morning working with xueyan to figure out why the icon wasn’t showing up from yesterday. we both came to the conclusion (around the same time) that it was due to the input variable. i was about to message my mentor when i realized that some other examples were using a custom return value instead of a generic container. i suspected that this would fix it, and low and behold, it did :P we also thought that her command handler and my server side was working when we plugged them together. it sort of did... but we were pretty excited initially, seeing some sort of results. we’re almost there

- started to clean up some unit tests and also set up some ground work for the unit test for the iOS PR, since i think i fixed most of the build issues from yesterday. but i still couldn’t build... sigh. i cleaned and rebuilt multiple times with no luck. i was confused why it wasn’t working... then after digging around later in the afternoon, realized someone made a PR to update the naming of something. so i had to pull again and then clean and rebuild. that actually worked (sometime in the afternoon)

- went to a team meeting 11:30-12pm

- grabbed lunch with roberto, kelly, lilia, dan and ellen. we went to the salad place, which i’ve never been before. roberto grabbed me a chicken caesar salad cause i was trying to start the command PR tests to run while i was gone eating. the line was really long so when i came just in time when they got their food. the salad was actually pretty great. it’s like a sweet green. yum :)

tried to go get boba but the line was just too long LOL. i grabbed a yogurt and brought it back to my desk

- spent the afternoon resolving the build issues for the iOS PR. worked on cleaning up the tests for the command PR. i still had one failing test on the android side. i dug around and couldn’t find the issue because the actual test seemed to be okay. then realized there was a text file attached to the failure and in it, it was something similar to what i had seen this morning working with xueyan. she added a null checker in the command handler side so i can’t push until that change is made

while i was blocked on that test, started a new PR for filling logic, since i haven’t actually been getting data from the user when they open up my page. now, their preferences are properly set when they open up the page. updated the corresponding tests

also made some small UI changes to the margins and icon colors. updated the corresponding tests.

overall, pretty productive afternoon i’d say

- went down to play melee from 5:30-6pm ish. me shang and eric were on one setup and mansfield and ivan were on another. i played falcon and i felt pretty good about how i was playing. i still lost, but i think my movement is actually starting to get a lot better. like the barrier to entry has been a foundation of tech skill and now i’m starting to focus more on the actual match instead of small tech stuff. of course it’s still sloppy but i think today was the first time i felt like i could do what i wanted and execute it relatively consistently

went back to my desk and tried to force push the command PR but realized that i couldn’t cause of the android failing test (despite my putting a note that xueyan’s PR had the fix for it). i spoke with my mentor later on in the evening around 8pm and he gave some options, but it’s not necessarily blocking us right now so it’s not too big of a concern. i can just wait for xueyan’s PR to be pushed

cleaned up some new tests for the UI changes, since they hadn’t previously showed up

went to grab dinner around 7pm in 1000 with eric and john. our main building cafe was closed again due to construction. it was some good mexican food :D

- brought it back and watched megalo box S1E11. it looks like the episode before the finale. the dramatic build up of yuri taking off his armor. i think this show’s kind of gone off the wire story-wise, but still entertaining to watch

- cleaned up some unit tests for the filling logic since i had to repull changes that xueyan pushed for an origin parameter, which affected my changes. cleaned that up and then submitted

- played melee with john for a bit. while we were playing jacob called me on facetime. i miss new york :’( it was sakib’s birthday and they had a surprise party. i also saw doug and diana with their funky costumes (sakib also got one). it was nice seeing them. jacob showed me the flower power speakeasy that they threw together in the dorm

- did some melee tech grind from 8:30-9pm. i practiced shield dropping a lot, with wave landing forwards and backwards from the ledge. my fingers felt a bit sore so i didn’t wanna go to ham. karl also messaged me around 9pm asking if i wanted to go home. he stayed to play board games with peeps

- ubered home with karl and got back around 9:30pm

- chilled at home watching the office and eating a bag of bbq chips i took from the office. and then made another pb&j sandwich. i watched S8E4. poor andy and his garden party :’(

watched some melee gameplay and also just trying to learn shield dropping tutorial videos and the gentleman for falcon

- took a shower and now it’s 12:36am. time to sleep

good night

Beats and Flow: Discover the Hip Hop Groove in Anime!

When hip hop and rap come to mind, you might think of classic songs, clothing styles, and dances from singers like Public Enemy, Beastie Boys, KRS-One, or Run DMC. What may not be your first thought, though, is anime! However, anime and hip hop have a pretty long-standing relationship, reflecting the popularity and growth of hip hop and rap in Japan over time. Hip hop first appeared in Japan in the 80s, credited to the time Hiroshi Fujiwara spent in the United States before bringing records back with him and becoming the first DJ in Japan. From there, hip hop and rap spread throughout Japan’s music and cultural circles, influencing music, clothing, art, and, of course, anime!

The relationship between the two is not as strange as it might sound, because anime is an audio-visual medium where creators are regularly trying to find new and exciting ways to engage their audiences, or mixing various musical styles with animated styles to find the perfect combination between aesthetics, much like mixing flavors together to find just the right blend for a pleasing bite.

Probably one of the most classic examples of this relationship is the soundtrack to Shinichiro Watanabe’s Samurai Champloo. Champloo followed Cowboy Bebopas an exciting mixture of genres. But where Bebop pushed jazz, Westerns, and sci-fi together, Samurai Champloo mixed hip hop and Edo-era samurai films. Watanabe is quoted as saying: “When I first come up with the idea of what I am going to create, quite often the music appears at the same time. So, with Samurai Champloo it wasn’t that I had the story in mind and then added hip hop to it. When I came up with the character of Mugen I heard hip hop at the same time, and I thought he was going to be a rapper samurai.”

That type of direction in thematics with music helped Watanabe enlist the help of hip hop artists Tsutchie and Force of Nature to create one soundtrack, and late hip hop artist Nujabes to produce two more records for Champloo. While Bebop didn’t lack for action, Champloo’s focus on swordplay and singular combat let various types of musical styles play out over the series, from R&B ballads to banging rhymes and beats. Many fans will still likely remember the beats to the opening and ending of Champloo, helped along by their extremely memorable music tracks and vocal mixture, with the ending song, “Shiki no Uta,” being particularly memorable!

Champloo wouldn’t be the last Watanabe series to mix visual aesthetics with audio tunes, as his next work Space Dandy regularly smashed genres and styles together in its attempts to send Dandy and co. on numerous crazy adventures. mabanua’s “I Want to Know” from episode 5 helped build the relationship established between Dandy and the wayward Adélie, as well as giving viewers a peek into the personality of Dandy beneath all of the bluster (a side that up to that point hadn’t really been explored yet). The soft vocals over the hip hop beat worked to establish the song as memorable, and its use in the episode was a key to making the episode itself shine!

And if you're thinking the name mabanua sounds familiar, you might be followingMEGALOBOX! Moving up from guest appearances, mabanuais in charge of music for the series, the title track “MEGALOBOX” and the “Intermission” track creating an iconic atmospheric sense of identity around the show. They're rough, hard-hitting beats that really connect with the main themes of the series and its gritty take on futuristic boxing and fighting to survive.

Thematically, hip hop has featured in episode 7, “The Road to Death,” and episode 11, “A Deadmarch,” as important set pieces. Episode 7’s rap from an unnamed kid from the slums plays over the montage of Joe’s rise to popularity as an “everyman” contender, while episode 11’s rap from Sachio serves as the rallying cry for Team Nowhere to overcome their doubts and break free from the control of others over their fates. As MEGALOBOX moves toward its conclusion, it seems likely that hip hop will continue to serve as an important aural factor in setting the scenes!TheMEGALOBOXOriginal Soundtrack, by the way, drops on June 27thand it features a whopping 47 tracks full of musical goodness. Don't miss out on mabanua's latest work!

For many, however, hip hop is more than just music. The somewhat contentious debate over the difference between hip hop and rap usually boils down to a question of culture, and in that regard, hip hop in anime tends to blend into the style of the shows it infuses. As mentioned above, Samurai Champloo’s fluid mixture of styles relies on hip hop music to act as a lynchpin; Space Dandy, a show made up of constant references, pastiches, and homages, similarly selects music appropriate to the animation style and content befitting the episode best.

But beyond visual aesthetics of animation, sometimes the clothing, grooming, and aesthetic styles of hip hop and rap culture are just as important as the music, such as in Santa Inoue’s Tokyo Tribe series! Although never released in America, Inoue’s hip hop-infused works blend references and parodies of hip hop personas and lifestyle into stories of rival gangs and dramatic action.

And Inoue’s manga and anime are just the tip of the iceberg in his hip hop empire; his brand of clothing, Santastic!, draws heavily from hip hop stylings, and he’s even helped create album art for numerous records. In a somewhat obscure note, his art was featured in an episode of ABC’s old home remodeling show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition! And in 2014, Tokyo Tribes was adapted into a live-action rap musical, if you’re interested in checking out some manga to anime to live action hip hop gangster action!

Not to be left out, Devilman Crybaby features its own intriguing hip hop mixture. While the show is an updated retelling of Go Nagai’s classic tragedy action series, one of the more compelling changes to the series was the introduction of rap to Wamu’s gang. Between scenes featuring Akira, Ryo, and Miki, these freestyle rap segments featured the talents of Ken 390 and Young Dais, with beatboxer AFRA, serving as a type of narration of events and issues going on in the series, particularly things happening to everyday people behind the scenes.

Of note is that all three of these performers have been involved with anime and hip hop in the past: Ken 390 performed on the single for Cyborg 009 Call of Justice, Young Dais has a starring role in Tokyo Tribes live action film, and AFRA is the beatboxing Shinpachi from Samurai Champloo!

As time goes on, there will likely be many more hip hop and anime collaborations to come; Lotus Juice’s iconic mixes from the Persona series have found their way into their animated counterparts, and the reciprocal nature of hip hop and anime’s cultural growth and exchanges are sure to continue as both expand and evolve with the times. Afro Samurai already paved the way for Western hip hop artists to work with anime production, with the Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA producing the music for the mash-up anime and movie series, so there’s no telling where the future of hip hop and anime collaborative pairings could go!

Have any favorite hip hop and rap songs from your favorite anime? Or know of any other hip hop influenced anime? Let us know in the comments!
